For the last eight days, my daughter Paloma and I have been traveling through Southern California from our rural home in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The trip was prompted by an invitation to participate in the Reveal-Reveal group show at Shatto Gallery in Los Angeles, CA. Curated by Mary Lai of Allied Special Projects and Todd Molinari of after/time Gallery in Portland, OR, Reveal-Reveal features 14 artists.
I exhibited my work at after/time Gallery last June in my solo show, Swimming Without Limbs. That opportunity led me to attend Tryst alongside after/time, where I was able to meet Mary Lai and witness her exceptional curatorial skills through her work with ASP. I was also able to connect ASP with after/time, and they have spent the last year developing a co-curated, multi-exhibition project in Los Angeles and Portland.
The timeline of this show aligned perfectly with summer vacation. Installation took place on June 1, but the opening wouldn’t be until June 6, forcing a stay in Southern California for at least a week. It seemed only fitting to take advantage of the gap by taking my daughter to Disneyland for her very first visit.
Before we could head south, however, we had to stop in San Francisco to pick up some pieces I had displayed at Fog City Flea and swap them out for new works. To avoid traffic, we stayed nearby in San Martin at a Hipcamp mini-farm, where we got to feed the animals and sleep in a tiny cabin. The next day, we hit the road and stopped in San Luis Obispo to hug a Moon Tree.

Once we arrived in LA, we crashed at a friend’s apartment and enjoyed a beach day with another friend and her baby. On Monday, we installed the show at Shatto Gallery before heading to Anaheim, checking into our hotel, and spending that evening and the next two days exploring the Disneyland parks. We made it to Irvine late Wednesday night and have been here visiting with family ever since.
Tomorrow, I head back to Los Angeles for the Reveal-Reveal opening. I have already sold a piece so I hope thats a good sign of more to come! I will. be sharing photos and content from the event, as well as updates from my journey home.
